From the age of 14, Paul has dedicated his life to mastering all styles of drumming. He has been teaching drums since 2005. Paul has a strong foundation in the roots of the instrument, while not becoming irrelevant to modern concepts. He has extensive experience teaching in primary schools and music academies across Melbourne.
A lesson with Paul is focused and flexible, meeting the needs of his students. Paul is passionate about consistent practice, ongoing study and live performance and is a versatile teacher suitable for all ages and skill levels.
Paul can help students with the following; improve technique, sight-reading, rudiments, jazz independence, endurance, speed, metal, double bass drum concepts, improvisation, rock and funk grooving and generally having fun learning songs. He also prepares students for AMEB, ANZCA and Rock School exams.
Paul has studied with various Melbourne based teachers since 1994, including Drumline courses, private lessons with director of D2 Drumline Campbell Phillips and drum kit lessons with various teachers at Drumtek in Northcote. He has also attended many clinics from the world greatest drummers such as Dom Famularo, Thomas Lang, John Blackwell Jr, Eric Moore, Dave Weckl, Grant Collins and David Jones.
Paul can be found doing session work for original Melbourne artists and performing within the Melbourne original’s scene. He has travelled across Australia many times in various original projects and done sessions in the UK, Japan and Malta.
Paul has spent time in original bands of all styles from hard rock, indie rock, various metal styles, pop and funk. In various original bands he has supported the likes of Urge Overkill, Goyte, Wolf Mother, Tim Rogers, Jebediah, The Fauves, Clinton “Bar” Mckinnon, X, British India, Thirsty Merc, Blue King Brown, The Pictures, Children Collide, The Grates, Red Riders and Bertie Blackman. In 2005 Paul was honoured to have Can frontman Damo Suzuki perform a blistering improv set with his band On The Mountain. He has also spent a vast number of years in the jazz cabaret scene playing cafes and venues across Melbourne. In 2015 Paul played the Eltham Jazz Festival.
In 2020 Paul recommenced his drum studies majoring in jazz and latin under Australia’s great Darryn Farrugia. He’s currently still studying under Darryn and gaining endless and crucial knowledge.
Paul’s main drumming influences include Jon Theodore, John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Brann Dailor, Chad Smith, Danny Carey, Vinnie Paul, Matt Sorum, Peter Erskine, Steven Adler, Dave Weckl, Thomas Pridgen, Dave Grohl, John Stanier, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, and Thomas Lang…. the list goes on.
Now living in Herevey Bay, Paul can only offer his drum lessons online and face to face drum lessons in Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast area.
