Dr. Mikhail Dumnov (Misha Doumnov) is a composer, performer and teacher. He was initially
trained in music performance and composition in the former USSR, where he grew up. Mikhail
started working as a composer in film, theatre, and contemporary art music in 2001 whilst
living in Melbourne, Australia. Since 2003 Dr. Dumnov has taught Violin in a variety of styles
and contexts, at Universities, schools and privately – from classical to various Eastern folk
traditions as well as various pop and dance genres. Dr. Dumnov completed a PhD in
Composition at the University of Edinburgh. A small part of his Mini-Ballet “Bird Dances”,
entitled “A Flurry of Calls” was performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 2018. Misha
returned to Australia in late 2019 and continues to teach Composition, Violin and
Improvisation in Melbourne. He is the author of a new improvisation pedagogy method and
continues practice-based research in this field. Recent (2020) work includes film soundtracks
and multiple composition commissions from one of the state orchestras of Chile, Orquestra
Marga Marga. He has also received commissions from the City of Melbourne for LaMama
Theatre. Misha also writes for and performs in Melbourne band LAZR BEES.
